Le Pr Antoine Italiano a fait ses études médecine au CHU de Nice en parallèle d’un parcours scientifique qui a été sanctionné par une thèse de doctorat en Sciences de la Vie et de la Santé en 2008. C’est à cette date qu’il a pris ses fonctions de Chef de Clinique des Universités-Assistant des Hôpitaux à l’Institut Bergonié auprès du Dr Binh Bui, jusqu’en octobre 2010. Pendant cette période il a été particulièrement investi dans le développement de la recherche clinique et notamment dans le domaine des sarcomes qui sont des cancers rares mais particulièrement graves pouvant survenir à tous les âges de la vie (chez le nourrisson comme chez la personne très âgée).
Au terme de son clinicat, il a rejoint le laboratoire du Dr Cristina Antonescu au Memorial Sloan Kettering à New York (USA) pour une année de recherche consacrée aux aberrations génétiques des sarcomes. Il a pu ainsi caractériser une nouvelle anomalie génétique dans un type de sarcome survenant chez le jeune adulte et dont la survie après le diagnostic n’est que de quelques mois.
A son retour à l’Institut Bergonié en novembre 2011, il a été nommé Praticien Spécialiste des Centres de Lutte Contre le Cancer par le Pr Josy Reiffers avec pour mission de développer la recherche clinique de phase précoce dans les sarcomes mais aussi dans les autres cancers. Grâce au soutien et au dynamisme des différents départements de l’Institut, il a pu contribuer à développer considérablement l’accès à l’innovation thérapeutique pour les patients de notre bassin de population. Au total, le Pr Italiano a conduit plus de 40 essais cliniques de phase I en tant qu’investigateur principal ces 5 dernières années ainsi que plus de 20 essais de phase II ou III dans les sarcomes des tissus mou.
Ses principaux axes de recherche concernent donc : la recherche clinique de phase précoce, l’identification de biomarqueurs prédictifs d’efficacité des thérapies ciblées, le développement de nouvelles thérapies dans les sarcomes des tissus mous et de l’os.
Membre de plusieurs sociétés savantes incluant l’ASCO, l’ESMO et l’AACR, Il fait partie du comité de lecture de plusieurs revues internationales et est à l’origine de plus de 160 publications dans des revues internationales comme le Lancet Oncology, le Jama Oncology, le Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research et Annals of Oncology.
Le 1er septembre 2016 il a été nommé Professeur des Universités-Praticien Hospitalier et son objectif est de contribuer au rayonnement de l’Institut Bergonié et de l’Université de Bordeaux dans le domaine de la cancérologie et devient directeur de l’unité INSERM U1312 – SARCOTARGET avec la gestion d’une équipe de 15 chercheurs, bioinformaticiens, cliniciens et techniciens, spécialisée dans la biologie et le ciblage thérapeutique des sarcomes et autres cancers rares.
Depuis 2019, il coordonne l’essai national MULTISARC. Il s’agit de la mise en œuvre d’une approche de séquençage exhaustif pour améliorer la prise en charge des sarcomes avancés dans le cadre du Plan France Médecine Génomique 2025.
En 2021, il prend la responsabilité du Département de Médecine de l’Institut Bergonié en coordonnant les activités cliniques et de recherche en oncologie médicale tout en supervisant l’organisation des essais cliniques précoces et des projets de médecine de précision.
Cette même année, il devient également coordonnateur scientifique du RHU CONDOR, projet lauréat du plan France2030 financé par l’Agence Nationale de la Recherche. Ce programme national, mené par un consortium de 8 partenaires publics et privés, vise à développer des stratégies d’immunothérapie pour les sarcomes à travers des essais cliniques, la découverte de nouveaux biomarqueurs et l’exploitation de l’intelligence artificielle pour la sélection des patients.
En 2023 puis 2024, le Professeur Antoine Italiano fait partie des chercheurs les plus cités au monde, selon le classement Clarivate Analytics.

Professor Antoine Italiano completed his medical studies at the University Hospital of Nice while simultaneously pursuing a scientific track, culminating in a PhD in Life and Health Sciences in 2008.
That same year, he took up the position of Chef de Clinique des Universités–Assistant des Hôpitaux at the Institut Bergonié, working alongside Dr. Binh Bui until October 2010. During this time, he was particularly involved in the development of clinical research, especially in the field of sarcomas — rare but particularly serious cancers that can occur at any age, from infancy to old age.
At the end of his clinicat, he joined Dr. Cristina Antonescu’s laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York (USA) for a year of research focused on genetic abnormalities in sarcomas. During this period, he was able to identify a new genetic abnormality in a type of sarcoma affecting young adults, for which survival after diagnosis is only a matter of months.
Upon his return to the Institut Bergonié in November 2011, he was appointed Specialist Practitioner at the French Comprehensive Cancer Centers by Professor Josy Reiffers, with the mission to develop earlyphase clinical research in sarcomas and other cancers. Thanks to the support and dynamism of the Institute’s various departments, he significantly contributed to improving access to innovative therapies for patients in the region. Over the past five years, Professor Italiano has led more than 40 phase I clinical trials as principal investigator, as well as over 20 phase II or III trials in soft tissue sarcomas.
His main research areas include: early-phase clinical research, identification of predictive biomarkers for targeted therapies, and the development of new treatments for soft tissue and bone sarcomas.
A member of several scientific societies including ASCO, ESMO, and AACR, he serves on the editorial boards of several international journals and has authored over 160 publications in international journals such as The Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, and Annals of Oncology.
On September 1, 2016, he was appointed University Professor–Hospital Practitioner, with the goal of contributing to the national and international reputation of the Institut Bergonié and the University of Bordeaux in the field of oncology. He also became director of INSERM Unit U1312 – SARCOTARGET, leading a team of 15 researchers, bioinformaticians, clinicians, and technicians specializing in the biology and therapeutic targeting of sarcomas and other rare cancers.
Since 2019, he has been coordinating the national MULTISARC trial, which implements a comprehensive sequencing approach to improve the management of advanced sarcomas as part of the France Genomic Medicine 2025 Plan.
In 2021, he took over as Head of the Department of Medicine at the Institut Bergonié, coordinating clinical and research activities in medical oncology, while overseeing the organization of early-phase clinical trials and precision medicine projects.
That same year, he also became the scientific coordinator of the CONDOR RHU (Hospital-University Research project), a winning project of the France 2030 plan, funded by the French National Research Agency. This national program, led by a consortium of eight public and private partners, aims to develop immunotherapy strategies for sarcomas through clinical trials, the discovery of new biomarkers, and the use of artificial intelligence for patient selection.
In both 2023 and 2024, Professor Antoine Italiano was ranked among the world’s most highly cited researchers, according to the Clarivate Analytics list.
